We now have a name for the disease caused by the novel coronavirus: COVID-19. Having a name matters to prevent the use of other names that can be inaccurate or stigmatizing. #COVID19https://twitter.com/WHO/status/1227248333871173632?s=20 …

This virus has the ability to kill 60% of the world’s population, but now I can rest easy knowing it has a new name. Seriously? RESIGN.

actually, naming is important here. I don't like the name (especially of the virus) but its critical when developing tests for a virus with closely related cousins (SARS1, MERS) that everyone involved be clear about which one their talking about

A name unassociated with Wuhan or China. Good one. Same way Spanish Flu was changed to H1N1. Well, Ebola was named the Ebola river in DR Congo, associated with Africa. Great strides in disease eradication~ selectivity.

"Spanish flu" didn't even originate in Spain. The reason we call it Spanish flu is because Spain didn't fight in World War I and the press weren't being censored in their reporting of the outbreak unlike the belligerent countries of the war.
